Privacy Policy

This policy covers how The Chess School treats personal information that we collect or receive from you. Personal information includes information such as your name, address, email address, or phone number, which you have provided to us and that is not otherwise publicly available.

Collecting Information

The Chess School collects personal information when you register with us, and may also do so when you use our products or services, or when you visit web pages of The Chess School or certain of our partners. The Chess School may combine information about you that we have with information we obtain from business partners or other companies. When you register we ask for information such as your name, email address, and zip code.

Once you register with The Chess School and sign in to our services, you are not anonymous to us. The Chess School automatically receives and records information on our server logs from your browser, including your IP address, The Chess School cookie information, and the page you request.

The Chess School uses this information for the following general purposes: fulfill your requests for products or services, contact you, conduct research, provide anonymous reporting for internal and external clients, or to improve our services.

Cookies

The Chess School may set and access The Chess School ‘cookies’ on your computer. These are used to remember your preferences and login name.

Your Information

You can edit your The Chess School account information at any time. We reserve the right to send you certain communications relating to the The Chess School service, such as service announcements or administrative messages, that are considered part of your Chess School account, without offering you the opportunity to opt-out of receiving them. You can delete your account by contacting The Chess School.

Confidentiality

We limit access to personal information about you to employees and contractors who we believe reasonably need to come into contact with that information in order to do their jobs. We have safeguards that comply with federal regulations to protect your personal information.

Protecting Your Information

The Chess School does not rent, sell, or share personal information about you with other people or nonaffiliated companies except to provide products or services you've requested, when we have your permission, or under the following circumstances:

  • We respond to subpoenas, court orders, or legal process, or to establish or exercise our legal rights or defend against legal claims;
  • We believe it is necessary to share information in order to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding suspected illegal activities, situations involving potential threats to the physical safety of any person, violations of The Chess School's terms of use, or as otherwise required by law.
  • We transfer information about you if The Chess School is acquired by or merged with another company. In this event, The Chess School will notify you before information about you is transferred and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

Young Children

The Chess School is especially committed to protecting the privacy of young children. Children under 13 years old may not register an account and use our service until directly confirmed by a parent or confirmed by an appropriate authority registered with us, such as a school or a club, who we reasonably believe has permission to act on the parent's behalf. In the latter case, there is a mechanism that the school or chess club may elect to use that simultaneously notifies the parent of their child’s involvement; however, we cannot guarantee that the school or club will choose to take advantage of this opportunity.

Activities of the young child on The Chess School may at any time be viewed by the parent or other confirming authority, or a parent who is later identified and confirmed, will receive copies of any correspondence to the child, will control the child's account settings, and must approve any invitations the child may receive for club memberships, friend requests, etc. A parent will be given a free account for this purpose, with a username and password separate from the child's.

Policy Updates

The Chess School may update this policy. We will notify you about significant changes in the way we treat personal information by sending a notice to the primary email address specified in your account or by placing a prominent notice on our site.
